Bulky Waste Contract Will Help Alleviate Poverty

Bolton Community Transport & Furniture Services (BCTFS) has become the latest member of the Furniture Re-use Network (FRN) to win a local authority bulky household waste collection contract.

The contract commenced 1st August 2014. BCTFS will collect all bulky household waste from residential properties in the Bolton area. Re-use and waste prevention figures are expected to improve as BCTFS will enter the properties to access the unwanted goods, rather than picking up the goods from outside, which are exposed to, and often ruined by the British weather.

If goods are reusable or repairable, BCTFS will make them available to low income households from their three outlets in Bolton and Farnworth.

Diane Firth, BCTFS’ Chief Executive says: “We’re delighted to win this contract with our local council. We need access to the reusable waste in order to pass it on to low income households and people in crisis; and we think Bolton Council sees the benefit of this, and of the social value we bring by providing workplace and training opportunities to disadvantaged adults”.

The contract will run for 2 years with a possible 2 year extension.

Bolton Council’s Executive Cabinet Member for Environmental Services, Cllr Nick Peel, added: “This new contract with BCTFS will bring improvements for our residents.

“It means that we are now able to collect additional items including cookers, washers, dryers and dishwashers and BCTFS will also collect from inside properties where required.

“This will assist residents that may struggle to move the items and will increase the amount of items that can be reused for the benefit of Bolton residents.”

Bolton Community Transport & Furniture Services also picks up WEEE from its local HWRC site for repair and re-use purposes, and is now supplying good quality beds and mattresses to Bolton Council’s Housing Department.

As FRN spokesperson Helen Middleton says: “We believe that waste is a poverty issue. 10 million furniture and electrical appliances are thrown away each year in the UK. Our sector diverts 2.7 million for people in need; there’s a further 3 million items with a re-use potential. Many of our 300+ members have experienced a 100% increase in demand for low cost essential items since April 2013. We need access to these unwanted `waste’ items. In addition, as local authorities are under increasing pressure to cut budgets, then working with the Furniture Re-use Network will help to reduce both their waste and their welfare bills. It’s common-sense”.
